Brands Hatch Circuit
Brands Hatch Circuit is a motor racing circuit near Swanley in Kent, England. Originally used as a dirt track motorcycle racing circuit on farmland, it hosted 12 British Grand Prix races between 1964 and 1986, and is now home to many British and international motor racing events.
Gerhard Berger once said that Brands Hatch was "the best circuit in the world".
Brands Hatch offers two track configurations: the shorter Indy circuit (1,198 miles) is set entirely within a natural amphitheatre, offering spectators views of almost the entire shorter configuration from any vantage point. The longer Grand Prix circuit (2,433 miles) has hosted Formula One races, including events such as Jo Siffert´s duel with Chris Amon in 1968 and future World Champion Nigel Mansell´s first win in 1985. Noise restrictions and the proximity of local residents to the Grand Prix circuit mean that the number of races held on the extended circuit is limited to just a few per year (usually for more established series such as the BTCC and BSB).
The full Grand Prix circuit starts on the Brabham Straight, a gently cambered section with a slight bank, before turning into the Paddock Hill Bend right-hander. Despite the difficulty of the corner, due to the straight that precedes it, this is one of the few overtaking spots on the circuit. The next corner, Druids, is a tight corner taken after the uphill braking zone at Hailwood Hill. The circuit then curves around the spectator area on the south bank into the downhill, banked Graham Hill bend and another gently cambered section on the Cooper Straight, which runs parallel to the pit lane. After the straight, the circuit climbs uphill through the decreasing radius Surtees bend before joining the back straight where the circuit´s top speeds can be achieved. The most significant changes in altitude on the circuit occur here at Pilgrim´s Drop and Hawthorn Hill, which leads into Hawthorn Bend. The circuit then winds around the woods with a series of medium-speed corners, the most notable of which are the downhill into Westfield and the blind Sheene bend. The track then emerges from the woods onto Clearways and rejoins the Indy Circuit for Clarke Curve with its climb to the Pit Straight and start/finish line.
The British Rallycross Circuit at Brands Hatch was designed and built by four-time British Rallycross Champion Trevor Hopkins. It is approximately 0.9 miles long and was completed around 1981. Unlike earlier rallycross circuits at Brands Hatch, the cars start at the start line, then turn right and head down the hill at Paddock Hill Kink. Through the left-right Esses below, the track rejoins the Indy Circuit to climb and round Druids Hairpin, before turning 90 degrees left through Langley Gap and over V-L
