Fairy Fencer F is a 3D Japanese role-playing game in a fantasy world. The game was developed by the Japanese studio Compile Heart, specializing in this genre. This is the first game in the new series called Galapagos RPG. Its representatives are typical Japanese role-playing games containing all the elements that have attracted fans around the world for many years. It is worth noting that the legendary Yoshitaka Amano prepared sketches and conceptual drawings for the Fairy Fencer F, and some musical works were made by the legendary composer Nobuo Uematsu.
The story presented in Fairy Fencer F takes place in a world that in the distant past was an arena of conflict between two powerful deities. They created a series of magic weapons to ensure their victory in battle. When the gods disappeared, their weapons, known as furies, fell into the hands of people called fencers. Each weapon has a smart guardian who contacts the owner and collaborates with him on a partnership basis. Fang, a young boy who is the protagonist of the title and one of the fencers, at the beginning of his adventure meets another representative of his profession named Tiara, who is trying at all costs to collect as many furies as possible.
The game is observed from a third-person perspective. We explore the three-dimensional locations shown on the general map of the world. Exploring individual levels, we are faced with various types of creatures, as well as with NPCs. Dialogs and clippings were made in a form known from visual novels (2D portraits and text displayed at the bottom of the screen). The combat system is an advanced version of what we could find in the Hyperdimension Neptunia series, another Compile Hearts work. Group members move freely around the battlefield, but receive commands in a step-by-step order. In addition to standard attacks, they also have special skills and unique movements. Heroes gain experience and improve their characteristics, gaining experience from defeated enemies. They also gain new skills by enhancing the weapons they use.
At first glance, the graphic design of the Fairy Fencer F resembles the Hyperdimension Neptunia series. This is not a coincidence, because the game was created on the same engine, and the designs of characters and backgrounds were prepared by the same artist. Therefore, we are dealing with very colorful anime graphics that fans of the early releases of Compile Heart will surely enjoy.
